Milan Cathedral Memento Mori Sleeve

This is a design concept, not a photograph of a tattoo. Before any tattooing, the design is redrawn for your body, placement and story.

Inspired by the main bronze door of Milan Cathedral, installed in 1906 and designed by Lodovico Pogliaghi. Its panels depict the sorrows and joys of the Virgin Mary.

The design takes the central quatrefoil medallion and the column below it, and turns every figure into a skeleton. At the centre is a Pietà: the mourner and the mourned are made of the same bone. In art history this theme is called memento mori — everyone is equal before death.

The design was printed at full size and rolled into a tube the width of an arm to test the composition all the way around before it was finalised. It has since been tattooed as a full sleeve.

A try-on preview places the design on a photo of your chosen area. It is not a healed tattoo photo; the real tattoo is what counts. Only a photo of the area is needed, and it is deleted after use.
