Zhong Kui in Ink-Wash Brushwork
He looks fierce, but he is there to protect you. In Chinese folk tradition, Zhong Kui is a demon-quelling guardian associated with protection and the hope for peace. For this piece, I brought an ink-painting interpretation of Zhong Kui onto the client’s lower leg.
Rather than treating the subject as conventional realism, I wanted to preserve the energy of Chinese brushwork. Dense black anchors the hair and beard; the robe is drawn with expressive strokes. Yellow, white, coloured greys and black build the layers, while untouched skin becomes part of the image.
As the lower leg turns, the face, robe and talismans unfold in sequence. The composition needed to read as one complete image while allowing its details to appear from different angles.
